Sarah Bowden (clarinet), Jon Fistein (cello) and Marion Caldwell (piano) play Beethoven and Zemlinsky at Christ Church Streatham, and are joined by Simon Asquith (tenor), Vicar of Christ Church.

The evening opens with Beethoven’s first cello sonata, warm, quick-witted music written in his twenties, in which the cello and the piano hand the tunes back and forth as equals. In the middle come English Folk and French songs. It ends with Zemlinsky’s trio for clarinet, cello and piano, big-hearted romantic music by a composer Brahms admired and helped into print, and one who is heard far less often than he deserves.
