Garfield Bailey is a South London-based artist and architect whose work explores the colour, rhythm and visual character of everyday urban life. His architectural background informs a particular sensitivity to composition, structure, space and the relationship between people and their surroundings.

Working primarily in painting and oil pastel, Bailey draws inspiration from the streets, parks, shops and people around him. His subjects are often deliberately ordinary: reflections in shop windows, figures passing through the street, market displays, trees casting shadows across paths, and fleeting moments encountered while walking through South London.

Photography plays an important role in his process. Rather than simply reproducing photographs, Bailey uses them as starting points, sometimes manipulating colour, cropping and simplifying images to reveal unexpected compositions within familiar scenes.

Increasingly, his work explores the boundary between representation and abstraction. Reflections, glass and movement fragment recognisable subjects into areas of colour, shape and pattern, which are then reinterpreted through the physical process of painting.
