Bernardete Blue’s artistic practice reflects on the experience of Motherhood.
The artist uses mainly homemade bread as sculptural material.
This materials’ basic components transformed through energetic kneading, caress, and the yeast’s pillowy effect followed by the baking in the oven can be comprehended as an analogy to generate and give birth a child.
Instructing a child to not play with food is therefore taken by the mother as means to confront what’s expected from her as a multifaceted woman and, consequently, release socially repressed desires, challenging what being a capable mother and a dedicated artist actually means.
Bernardete Blue lives and works in London and has attended University of the Arts London and Goldsmiths University.
